10 Of My BIGGEST Blogging Tips (POR Turns 2!)

Happy second birthday Phases Of Robyn! It’s been a mad/weird/fun/exciting/strange 2 years, but I’m still uploading blog posts and sharing with you my favourite outfits, beauty products and life advice. I’m of course still enjoying it as ever, and especially in the last 6 months or so I’ve seen a massive growth in readership and collaborations etc, so I’m feeling pretty proud right now.

I thought I’d do a celebratory blog post with my 10 BIGGEST blogging tips and advice, because I like to think I’ve learnt a thing or two over the last 2 years. It would be wrong of me to give you a new birthday blog post without a sassy outfit too – so enjoy my loves!

For a long time I used to stick to schedules and write a blog post at least every day or two, but I found it wasn’t really feasible for me (especially as I have another job part time). I was really hard on myself and thought that if I didn’t write a lot of posts then people would ‘forget about me’, but I’ve developed a new attitude in the last few months – QUALITY NOT QUANTITY. Quantity is great, but if you’re struggling for ideas, or you’re not in the mood to write a post, then it’s A-OK!

You know the situ – ‘Hi, we love your blog, would you like to feature this item (which is really similar to loads of other items you already own) in exchange for the item?’. Guys and gals, you gotta stop working for free. Occasionally it’s cool to accept gifts, maybe if the brand has no budget and you LOVE the item, but know your worth and don’t accept a billion free gifts for a years worth of time and effort. Think about the fact that hugeee bloggers get paid, and you may not have as many followers/readers as them, but you have a fraction of it, so why not get a fraction of the money? It may not be millions, but it’s better than nothin’!

It’s so easy to think ‘oohhh that looks cool, I’ll do a review for that’ in exchange for products or *hopefully* some cheeky dollar. However, it’s very easy to accept things you don’t feel that amazed by just because you’re going to get paid, or get free stuff. Blogging is so much more than that, and you should only narrow down collaborations with brands that really suit what you always write about.

Last year I invested in a new Olympus Pen and 3 funky lenses for it – it was literally the best decision I ever made! I have a normal lens for any kind of shot, I have a 30mm Macro lens for up close/detail shots, and a 45mm for outfit shots (to get that blur!). You can read more about photography tips/settings here if you fancy, but I encourage any blog enthusiast to think about a decent camera!

I wrote a post recently all about approaching brands for collaborations – and it has been one of my most read posts EVER! Seriously though, you’ll never get anything unless you ask, so introduce yourself to new brands and let ’em know you’re loving them. Be realistic about it, Topshop probs ain’t giving you a billion quid for sharing their new denim range, but there are a LOT of brands out there looking for people like YOU <3.

This kinda links to tip 5, but there are so many websites you can connect with to create potential collaborations. Here are a few: The Blogger Programme, Shopping Links, Whalar, Type The Hype, Tribe (app for Insta ads), Takumi (app for Insta ads), Post For Rent. It can’t hurt signing up to them to see what happens!

It’s so easy to get caught up in a ball of stress when it comes to blogging. “I don’t have time to write this”, “It’s too dark to take photos”, “I want to post today but I’m not feeling 100%”. YOU are in control when it comes to blogging, and you should never let it stress you out. Remember why you’re doing it in the first place, and go back to that place where you do it simply for enjoyment.

Blogging, especially if you’re trying to make a bit of a career out of it, can create so much jealousy when it comes to other blogs. I’m very guilty of being jealous of bigger bloggers and wondering how I can get as ‘big’ as them, or how to get ‘that collaboration’. At the end of the day, we’re all different, and we’re all at different stages of blogging. ‘We’re all at a different page in the book’ and all that jazz!

Simples, but use social media for what it’s there for and NETWORK. By that I mean engage with others, and others will engage with you. Make friends with other bloggers, and read other people’s posts and tell ’em how fab they are. The more love you share, the more you’ll get back. You can even create a Whatsapp group or something with some new blogging buddies, you’ll honestly become bezzies!

Blah blah blah, it’s the only thing anyone ever tells you when you start blogging, but don’t be shy about your personality and let your weird and bubbly personality ooze out of you. I’ve always been a ‘chatty’ blogger, and I pride myself on writing blog posts as if I was actually talking to one of you – keep your blog real and be proud of YOU.

Tee – ASOS

Blazer – River Island (in sale)

Trousers – River Island (in sale)

Bag – Urban Outfitters (in sale)

Necklace – Urban Outfitters (in sale)

Shoes – ASOS (in sale) – also in wide fit!

Watch – c/o Prisma Watches

So all that’s left for me to do is give you the low-down on my outfit. This outfit pretty much just screams ‘Phases Of Robyn’ with a monochrome vibe and some touches of colour. The majority of the outfit was in the sale (as you know, I’m a total sale spotter) and I’m absolutely obsessed with my mini white bag from UO. You’ll also notice I’m sporting a new watch from Prisma Watches which just nails my new red obsession.

Anyhoo, hope you love the post, and here’s to the next 2 years of POR! All the love for all of your ongoing support, you huge bunch of babes.

R x

Loved reading this post 🙂 totally feel you on getting stressed out about my blog. Trying not to let it get to me anymore though. As I work it’s just not feasible for me to write and edit a post more than once a week!
