Giving Your Workwear A LIFT

It’s 7.30am, your hair is in a messy bun, you haven’t brushed your teeth yet and you’ve got a bit of toast hanging out of your mouth… and then you have to decide what to wear. UGH. I wish I could be that kinda gal that decides it all the night before, and it works for about 3 days until I start planning it in my head and forgetting my choices by the next morning.

When it does come around to outfit creating the next day I usually reach for a comfy pair of trousers, any top that is clean and a pair of black shoes that will be appropriate and not make my feet ache. Sound familiar?

Well, this is boring. IT’S SO BORING. If I don’t choose my outfits the night before I usually end up in an all black ensemble with no pattern, no colour and no confidence, and that leads to a bad day most of the time. It’s time to give our workwear a lift, whilst keeping comfort levels high and time consumption low.

When you have no idea what to wear to work it’s always easy to start with a simple pair of trousers, whether they’re black, grey, navy or burgundy. But let’s be honest, we all prefer black. In the last few months I’ve been upgrading my wardrobe with ‘fun work tops’ that are more colourful, contain no black and also aren’t just a plain material. I’m talking frills, florals, sleeves, different cuts, chiffons, plaid, THE LOT.

It takes a bit of bravery to choose items like this (who’d have thought I’d ever wear white on my pale skin?!) but they look so good against black trousers! After all, you can get away with wearing the same pair of trousers a few times a week, but not necessarily the same top, so obviously that’s where your investments should be going.

In this look my top and trousers are both from Missy Empire, and with lots of items similar to these on their site I’m sure you’ll find something you love on there. Yes the top also comes in a black version, but you’re only allowed it if you wear it with white trousers 😉

And what’s so good about wearing black trousers and a colourful top? You can match your shoes and create a real ensemble. It’s not just about lifting your outfit, it’s about lifting your mood and your confidence while you’re at it.

These orange heels keep comfort key with not too high a heel (I’ll admit I’m v good at walking in heels so they might be a bit high for some of you) and the straps across the whole foot and ankle means they won’t slip off throughout your working day. And they’re bright orange… and they match your top… what’s not to love?! The shoes are from Ego and as always you can get 20% off with code PHASESOFROBYN20 too, so they don’t even have to break the bank.

I think we can sometimes shy away from brighter shoes in case they don’t go with many things, or if the heel is too high, but high street shops are really getting to know that not all of us want 6 inch heels and open toes (& kitten heels are also making a come back)!

Are you an all-black workwear girl? Or do you have a penchant for going all-out-colour in the office?! I’m somewhere in the middle, but it definitely pays off to shop around the high street for some non-black tops to wear with your dark trousers!

Let me know what you think of the outfit in the comments!

I swear that one day I’m going to be that girl that preps everything the night before, haha but for now I’m just going to panick every morning before I have to leave the house in 5 minutes and still standing in front of the wardrobe in my underwear. I prefer dark colours but my tops are most of the time very bright – well, at least during spring summer season. Lovely outfit!

I’m trying my best to be like that… but not always successfully! I like dark colours but trying to have colourful tops with dark trousers because I feel comfortable in darker trousers/skirts!

That blouse and those shoes – I LOVE. I’ve started experimenting with my work wear again after getting stuck in a rut and it’s so much fun xx

I am forever wishing I could be the kind of gal that plans all my outfits in advance but most mornings I’m definitely there throwing any old thing on (and as a result I arrive at work in some super weird outfits sometimes). These trousers are lovely on you! I struggle so much to find nice work trousers that fit me well and don’t make me look weird and frumpy. LOVE those shoes too xxx

Yessss well I definitely recommend these! I like a tapered trouser because even though skinny trousers look good on other people, they never really fit me right and end up looking like leggings. Glad you like it!

I try to be the girls that plans the outfit the night before, I do it sometimes but more often that not I end up just like you, thank you for the tips! You can’t go wrong with black trousers and a cute colorful top, and I love the shoes!!

Haha me too, but I’m getting much better at it! It just takes a bit of a change of routine!
